As you’ll see on the walk to the wards, windows and light are very important at St Christopher’s. This is continued on the wards itself, with each of the rooms having large windows looking out over the local area or the gardens.
We want the people staying with us and the hospice itself to feel part of the community, not to be hidden away. The large windows, passing trains and easy access to the gardens all help to make sure this is the case.
We have three wards named after donors: Alex, named after our patron, HRH Princess Alexandra; Rugby, which was funded by Rugby School and City, named after the City of London Livery companies who donated to support the construction of the hospice.
Across the wards there are a total of 36 beds. Each year around 850 people are cared for on them, with the average length of stay being 13-15 days.
One in four people staying with us return home after their stay, with some coming to the wards for respite care and others needing support for issues such as symptom control, or psychological distress.
Whilst staying with us, each person receives holistic care, tailored to their specific needs. For example, support is on offer from doctors and nurses as well as social workers, physiotherapists, spiritual care and many others.
Families, friends and even pets are also welcome to visit, often staying overnight.
